A recap of key turns of events

As we plan to close our live inclusion of the passing of Iran’s leader and seven others, here’s a recap of the key turns of events:

The helicopter carrying Ebrahim Raisi was en route to Tabriz, following a dam opening ceremony on the Azerbaijan border. Tragically, a crash occurred, claiming the lives of Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and six others. The cause of the accident remains uncertain, prompting Iran’s Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, to launch an investigation.

Funeral proceedings for Ebrahim Raisi and his companions are scheduled to commence tomorrow in Tabriz at 9:30 am local time. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has declared five days of mourning in honor of the deceased.

Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed as acting president, with Ali Bagheri Kani assuming the role of foreign minister, formerly held by Amir-Abdollahian. Additionally, the election date has been set for June 28th.

In Tehran, government supporters have begun gathering for mourning ceremonies, a customary practice during such events. Meanwhile, through virtual platforms, many Iranians are expressing their grief over Raisi’s passing.

Internationally, the United States offered condolences but also criticized Raisi’s role in the suppression of Iranian citizens, labeling him a “brutal participant.” Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed sympathies, highlighting Raisi’s friendship with Russia, while China lamented his loss as a significant one for the Iranian people.
